The Most Common Mistakes Made by Wooden Pool Owners – and How to Avoid Them

A wooden swimming pool is more than just a place to swim. It is a natural extension of the garden that combines the beauty of wood, everyday comfort, and a durable structure. At the same time, wood remains a natural material that reacts to moisture, temperature changes, and the way it is used. That is why proper maintenance and correct usage are essential for preserving the pool’s appearance and longevity.

Below, we present the most common mistakes made by wooden pool owners and practical tips on how to avoid them effectively.

Lack of Regular Wood Maintenance

One of the most common mistakes is assuming that factory impregnation eliminates the need for further wood care. Class IV impregnation protects the structure against fungi and insects, but it does not protect the wood from UV radiation, rain, or the natural aging process.

What can happen?

First of all, it is important to remember that these are natural processes characteristic of outdoor wood exposed to changing weather conditions. You may notice:

-small surface cracks,
-discoloration,
-fading of the surface,
-gradual loss of the wood’s visual appearance.

How to prevent it?

ABATEC recommends regular maintenance using exterior wood oil with a hydrophobic protective coating. This treatment should be applied at least once a year and even more frequently in demanding weather conditions. Properly protected wood retains its color longer, handles moisture and sunlight better, and becomes less susceptible to cracking and excessive drying.

Incorrect Water Chemistry

Water problems are very often caused not by the pool itself, but by improper chemical maintenance. The most common mistakes include:

-excessively high or low pH,
-irregular water testing,
-overdosing pool chemicals,
-placing chlorine tablets directly into the pool,
-insufficient filtration.

Why is it a problem?

Improper water chemistry can lead to liner discoloration, mineral deposits, and algae growth. In the long run, it may also negatively affect pool equipment and shorten its lifespan.

What are the most important rules?

-maintain pH levels between 7.0 and 7.4,
-test the water at least 1–2 times per week,
-use only professional pool chemicals,
-place chlorine tablets only in a floating dispenser,
-never pour chlorine granules directly into the pool.

Filtration Running for Too Short a Time

Many users run the filtration system only for a short period of time, especially during cooler weather. However, insufficient filtration can quickly lead to poor water quality. The result is often cloudy water, algae growth, and difficulties maintaining stable chemical parameters.

How long should filtration run?

It is recommended that the filtration system operates for approximately 8–12 hours per day, and at temperatures above 25°C for at least 12 hours daily. Regular filter backwashing and cleaning of the skimmer basket help maintain stable water quality.

Lack of Proper Protection for In-Ground Installations

Partially or fully in-ground pools require proper ground preparation and effective drainage. The most common mistakes include:

-missing or improperly executed drainage,
-installation on unstable or waterlogged ground,
-lack of proper moisture insulation,
-incorrectly prepared concrete base.

Why is it important?

Excessive moisture and poorly prepared ground can negatively affect the stability of the entire pool structure. In practice, this may lead to deformation of wooden elements, structural issues, and reduced wood durability. Long-term exposure to moisture combined with insufficient ventilation may also encourage mold development.

For this reason, installation should always be carried out according to the technical instructions and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Neglecting Everyday Maintenance

Regular maintenance has a significant impact not only on the appearance of the pool, but also on its durability.

What should you remember?

-remove debris from the water surface daily,
-vacuum the pool regularly,
-use a pool cover during periods when the pool is not in use to help protect against external dirt,
-brush pool walls and internal stairs regularly to reduce algae growth.

Completely Draining the Pool for Winter

Completely draining the pool is one of the most serious maintenance mistakes. Water helps stabilize the pressure exerted on the pool walls, and an empty structure may become deformed. In practice, fully draining the pool can lead to structural deformation, liner issues, and even warranty loss.

How should you prepare the pool for winter properly?

-never drain the pool completely,
-lower the water level below the skimmer,
-disconnect the filtration system,
-protect nozzles and hydraulic installations,
-use winter chemicals and a winter cover suitable for low temperatures.
